Two Zeros at The Birdcage – AT Thru-Hike Days 78,79

Location: The Birdcage, Dalton, Massachussetts

I took a planned zero today. There is no charge at the Birdcage so I decided that I better take one. I had a lazy morning. I ate some biscuits, some cereal, and some potato chips. I went with Mountain Squid to the mall. I had a few delicious slices of NY style pizza and tried on boots at EMS. I need a new pair of boots to replace my boots that are falling apart. The boots are disintegrating. Giant holes have replaced the creases that have formed over 600 miles. The leather is rotting. I decided that the Vasque Breeze will be the boots to take up the job of hiking in the near future. I hope the blister process won’t be too bad. The boots fit well in the store. When we were leaving, Cold Feet, a northbounder, and I posed for a Polaroid picture in the EMS display outside of the store. The photo was added to a bulletin board of AT hikers to visit the store.

We went back to the Birdcage. I don’t remember much else that happened on my zero day. I never can. The days are so dull and pointless. Mainly I just sit around on zero days and let my body recuperate. Mt knees need as much time off as they can possibly get. I am feeling healthy though. I plan to be at Delaware Water Gap by September 10th. If I can do that, then Harper’s Ferry won’t be a problem by October 1st.

And Another Zero Day…

Another zero, I took an unplanned zero today because I dent get a chance to get to the post office in Williamston, MA yesterday. I left a mail drop there because I didn’t want to carry the food over Greylock Mountain. Also Bears received bad news from home and didn’t want to hike. Mountain Squid took me to get my box in Williamston. I also received a care package from Katie with a watch and a bottle of Texas Pete. I had to leave the rest of the hot sauce to Rob and the Birdcage because it was heavy and in a glass bottle. I watched movies the rest of the day. I had Taco Bell for dinner and bought Mountain Squid dinner for driving me around the Berkshires. I slept in the cave again and got a great night’s sleep. Boring zero day. I’m ready to return to the trail.
