Today we left Cheese Factory site and headed for Dicks Creek Gap. We were in for a long day. The weather couldn’t be more perfect for hiking. Blue skies for days. About 2.5 miles into the day Johnny’s pack fell apart – belt buckle broke and he had to tie it around his waist, then the chest strap broke, total bummer. So he was carrying 62lbs on his shoulders the whole trek. What a trooper. We caught up with Rocco Shun and hiked together most of the day. We decided to grab a room in Hiawassee and split it so we could get Johnny a new bag and resupply. It was our longest day yet and boy were we feeling it. Everything ached at the end of the day from our head to our toes literally. Finally got to Dicks Creek Gap about 4:40pm… Now we had to hitchhike 12 miles into town. This was a first for us so it was interesting. Got a partial ride from an older guy for about a mile and a half – we’ll take it! Anything not to walk another inch. Then pretty quickly we got picked up by a super nice guy and his son. Into town we went. Holiday Inn with a hot tub?? Heaven! Grabbed a bite at the infamous Daniel’s Steakhouse $8 buffet is a thru-hikers dream. Few beers down the hatch and we slept like babies.
