Hiking through the Smokeless Smoky Mountains

today was a great day!   I am very happy that I stayed over at the shelter through the storm.   It was a 14 mile day. With a great hike over the highest point on the trail.  Clingmans Dome, and it was amazing.   The whole trail changed as I entered the high alpine forest.   It took me back to when I was in the Pacific Northwest. Like walking through an ancient chrismass tree forest. The smells were like Christmas time.  The cool breeze today with such little humidity.   As I walked through the Forrest I slowed down to enjoy it.  I played my harmonica my pops got me before I left and I think I’m starting to get the hang of it.  I also pulled out the jaw harp Mandi got me in Hiawassee ga.   Today was just an awesome day.  It was beautiful and I was in a great mood.

To top it all off my feet didn’t hurt all day.   So now I’m ready to put in some miles.   Although, I don’t think I’m gonna get crazy.  It was awesome for being able to take breaks and just enjoy the scenery and nature.  I am in the group of people that seem pretty cool.  Wilson a  middle aged guy,  a financial advisor I believe, Coed is a 28 year old Jewish guy.  Although he looks 20 , and of course there is Benjali who is a mainer with an interesting personality.  I like them all as they are easy to get along with.  It’s a montley crew indeed.   Hahahah.   There are a bunch of people at the shelter tonight.  It’s the bottleneck as they call it. Everyone’s getting back on the trail after going into Gatlinburg TN to resupply and party.  A couple of young guys from the night before left the shelter at 3 am to catch the sunrise on clingmans.  And they made it.   I was of course bummed because I hadn’t manned up and try myself.   Although it will be a good reminder for those moments in the months to come.   Well it’s off to bed and another day down.    I just hope i start sleeping better.
