Location: Historic Hilltop Hotel, Harper’s Ferry, WV
I said goodbye to Katie this morning. I enjoyed staying with her for a couple nights and being in familiar surroundings. Mom and Dad drove Not Bad and me to Harper’s Ferry, and the ride passed as quickly as the train ride had. In Harper’s Ferry, we ate a decent barbeque lunch and then went to the outfitter. I have decided to stop carrying a tent, since I so rarely use it and it constitutes more than ten percent of my pack weight at 4-5 lbs. I picked up a small tarp that I can string between trees as an emergency shelter, but from here until the end of the trail I will sleep at shelters each night.
After lunch, we decided that we would visit Antietam, so we drove from Harper’s Ferry to Boonesboro in the afternoon. We rode along the 12 miles that Not Bad and I had walked just a few nights earlier. The car ride between the towns took only a few minutes, but it took Not Bad and me several hours to walk it through the rainy night. It helped reinforce just how slowly we move as hikers. After an hour or so at Antietam, reading monuments and plaques, we returned to Harper’s Ferry. We ate dinner at the only restaurant that we could find open, and then returned to the Hilltop Hotel for the night.
