Location: Outside Monson, Maine
Tim and I hike most of the day together. The hike was wet and messy. The rain fell off and on. When we were coming down Barren early in the day, Tim and I followed Eric, who led us off the trail and a mile down an overgrown fire lane that wasn’t the AT. While walking back down the road, Joel and Andrea, later named Dr. Rudder and Cats at Shaw’s Boarding House, had followed the trail that we blazed and ended up on the road. Eric opted to continue backtracking. Tim and I decided to head due North, with Joel in the lead, until we intercepted either the trail or the river. After pushing through a mess of small trees, we found the trail running along the Piscataquis West river. We forded the river and pushed toward the lean-to to spend out last night before Monson.
When we arrived, the lean-to was full. I decided to camp overnight and get to Monson the next day. Tim and Eric decided to hike through the night, fording two rivers and crossing two mountains, to get to Monson. They succeeded hiking a pitiful 21 miles in 23 hours. They arrived in time for 6:30am breakfast.
