Wilson turned 8 today, the first birthday for the family in Chile. So far in Wilson’s life, he’s had two birthdays on our adventures.
Here’s a picture of Wilson around his 2nd birthday at Olympic National Park on our 30,000 mile Airstream adventure around the U.S.
He’s gotten so big, and he still loves sticks, rocks, and exploring beaches.
Today, in Santiago, we celebrated Wilson. He woke to a decorated house, a few presents, and special pancakes. The big surprise was a lunch at Insert Coin Bar, a gaming-themed restaurant downtown that serves Pokemon burgers and fun yogurt drinks call Jigglypuffs. The main attraction though, the Nintendo 64 at the table. We spent time playing various Nintendo games from the 90s.
On the one hand, Wilson could have seen the downside of an 8th birthday spent aboard. No friends, few presents, and some basic toys as presents. He received his prized asks, a Minecraft Lego set and some Pokemon cards. But in a need to build up our family’s recreational activity options in the nearby parks, we got Wilson a basketball, soccer ball, baseball, and frisbee for his birthday. All things we can use together.
Jane spent hours making clothes for his stuffies. She picked up fabric at a local fabric store, secretly took measurements of each animal, and stitched together various clothing items. They’re pictured below on the table.
Wilson had great spirits about the circumstances, and he seemed genuinely thrilled with his birthday. He was also touched by all of the love that came in via videos sent from friends and family’s in the U.S. He went to bed happy and exhausted, which is how all 8 year old birthdays should end.
