After camping in Rio Tranquilo, we headed south on the Carreterra Austral on a several day mission to reach the end of the famous highway. After lunch in the park in Cochrane, we opted for a detour to Tortel, a unique fishing village built on docks, decks, and boardwalks along a steep hill at the water’s edge. It turned out to be interesting for only a short time, and in retrospect, we all consider the town to have been skippable. The food was mediocre and the accommodations basic relative to the high price. The often quarreling stray dogs, the garbage under the boardwalks, and the sewage smells detracted from the potential charm of the town. We were underwhelmed enough that we cut our trip short, leaving the room rent and key on the windowsill since we couldn’t find the owner of the hostel.
