We woke early this morning to hike Cerro Manhuequito, the smaller peak adjacent to the larger Manhueque. Both mountain summits we can see from different rooms in our home. The trailhead is only a fifteen minute drive. We planned to leave the trailhead at dawn, giving us enough time to reach the summit of Manhuequito.
At the trailhead, there are multiple trails leading to various summits. None of them marked and all well worn. After about an hour of hiking, we realized we had climbed the wrong mountain. We were on Manhueque (the big one), not Manhuequito (the little one). Without enough time to reach the summit and then return home to start a call for work, we stopped for breakfast at an overlook and watched the sunrise over the snow-capped Andes. Still a spectacular view. And we’ll return to hike to the top of both mountains, Manhuequito and Manhueque.
