We had heightened expectations to participate in the family 5k in Lo Barnechea this weekend. However, as we often find in Santiago, we were foiled by our mistranslation of schedules, plans, and other logistics. Road closures delayed our arrival to the parking area for the race, and since we were late, we missed the busses to the starting line of the race. We thought the busses ran shuttles, starting at 7:45am. As it turns out, all busses left on a single trip at 7:45am. No shuttles. Without time or information to figure out plan B, we returned home sad and defeated. We’re going to run our own family 5k this morning and find a fun substitute activity, but we’re disappointed to have missed out on the event.
We thought we had this race all figured out. Picking up our race packets the day before was a breeze. The staff was well-organized and drive up / pick up was easier than expected. The ease of that process caused us to lower our guard. We thought getting to the race would be similarly smooth, but we find again the little things tripping us up as we make our way in this city, language, and culture.
