While traveling long-term, it’s so important to keep some consistency with traditions. We’ve been able to do this with two little traditions here in Chile. The first is shopping for children listed on an angel tree. The kids always love picking children their own age so that they can choose gifts and items they themself would like to receive. We were so happy to see that our church in Santiago had an angel tree to make this tradition easy for us this year.
The second tradition is that the kids and I always go to Starbucks when the holiday cups arrive. We buy a drink and then turn on the Christmas music station on the radio. The first full Christmas carol that comes on the radio is deemed “The Christmas song of the year”. Honestly, part of me was a little worried that “Blue Christmas” or “I’ll be Home for Christmas” would come on the radio this year, and we would all cry.
We got lucky and “Sleigh Ride” came on. With its upbeat jingle, we all danced to it happily and the tradition lived on. Long live Christmas traditions big and small.
