When camping in Rio Tranquilo, we had originally planned to drive a few hours for a boat ride to the front of San Rafael Glacier. We were take aback though by the cost for the boat tour, which is a whole production with food and drink. Combining the time and cost, it just wasn’t worth it to us since we had seen so many glacier already.
As an alternative, and for only about 40% more than the cost of the boatride, we opted to hire a helicopter to fly use into the park to visit different glacier, in particular, the Los Leones glacier. The San Rafael Park has nearly 30 glaciers in it, and so we decided seeing a few of the others (instead of the big one) would be fun. We met the helicopter at Terra Luna Lodge for the hour or so round trip.
Despite Wilson nearly plummeting to a broken and frozen death in a crevasse after we landed on the helicopter on the glacier, we had a great flying experience.
The kids especially enjoyed the microphones. “Do you read me? Over. Khrrrsch.” Again and again and again.

Wow wish I had been there to see Wilson fall in a cravas! OH WAIT, I WAS!
