English language books in Santiago are hard to obtain, especially new books. In book stores, the English language section is tiny, as Jane discovered in our first week in Chile.
The used book market among expats is strong. We’ve bought boxes of books for the kids to enjoy.
The Santiago Community Church, which we’ve been attending since we arrived, has also opened up a couple of options for accessing these precious books.
The church has a small library, and each Sunday the kids select one or two books for the week.
Also, a generous member of the congregation, a former teacher, has a large private collection of books. She brings a bag full of books every week to church, and the kids get to sort through them and take about a dozen home for the week. The woman benefits as well, as Jane has a couple of books in her own collection that she’s lent to the lady.
