After arriving in Antarctica, we boarded our ship at Frei Station (which is on the west side of the South Shetland Islands at the top of the above map) to sail through the night across the Bransfield Straight.
We spotted humpback whales as soon as we left the Frei Station harbor, which excited us for the wildlife to come.
We had a slightly rolling night on the sea. We could sense we were in open water, but it wasn’t rolling like an ocean.
In the morning, we woke to wide open water with scattered icebergs. From our balconies, we admired the ice shapes as we passed and spotted wildlife.
The Bransfield Straight crossing brought us to Harry Island, an island covered in an impressive ice dome, for an off-ship excursion.
Given our early and rushed arrival the nigh before, we were now a day ahead of the proposed expedition schedule.
