Every Sunday in Santiago, 30,000 people turn out with their bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, and running shoes to enjoy a five hour block of time in which certain roads in Santiago are shut down for recreation. We live within a few blocks of the route, and we had a chance last Sunday to participate. We cycled from our home in Vitacura (located up near Sport Frances on the map) to our church (located down near the Costanera Center), and after service we biked back. It’s a well-organized program, with cones and signage designating road closures, vendors like Gatorade sponsoring free concessions, and crossing guards where needed to control traffic at certain intersections where vehicle traffic can still cross.
