Before we left for Chile, I searched many expat forums looking for suggestions on what to bring from abroad. The number one suggestion was any over the counter medication that we might take. So I purchased, Tylenol, Vicks vapor rub, Benadryl, NyQuil, and the kids equivalents and hoped we wouldn’t need them. They have some similar medications here but nothing exactly the same. Spending time trying to find what you think you might need and comparing ingredients doesn’t sound like something I’d want to do when I’m not feeling or thinking well.
Last weekend Jane had a cold with a touch of a fever, so I broke into our stash. I was grateful to not have to navigate the pharmacy for the basics when she got sick. Then I came down with the fever, cold and cough and was even more glad I had Vicks and NyQuil so I could get some rest and recover.
We’re constantly trying to teach the kids “how to help tomorrow Wilson/Jane out”. Think ahead of what you can do or get out of the way so that you look back and say “thanks yesterday me for getting that extra assignment done, now I can go to the skatepark”. So I’m here to thank former me for researching and packing the basic medications we might need for minor sicknesses.
