My first exposure to trolling as a kid was pulled Clark spoons on #1 planers for Spanish and Blues outside Beaufort Inlet, NC. Even as an adult, I enjoy the consistency and action of trolling for Spanish and Blues. They are easy to catch and can come in great numbers. A more important characteristic though, when it comes to fishing with kids, is that the fish are relatively predictable compared to other fish in the sea. It’s often easy to catch them within a few minutes and every few minutes, and if not, the lizardfish usually provides some action.
Each chance I get, I’ll shoot out the intel with Wilson (sometimes Jane) to spend an hour trolling. We can catch them early and be home for breakfast, or we can take a quick trip after work to grab some before sunset.
