My first fly fishing trip out west. Went to Gardiner, MT with some experienced fisherman, and we spent several days hiking to parts of Yellowstone National Park to fish. Two days we went with guides, once on wade trip and once on a float trip, and then three days we self-guided.
The more experienced fisherman out-fished me 10 to 1. On one day, a couple of them reached nearly 100 fish, and I caught about 10. As a beginner fly fisherman, my technique, presentation, and time spent tangled in trees or grasses hurt my numbers.
In all, the fishing was good for me, and the scenery great. Spending time hiking through Yellowstone, reaching out of the way places to fish, and discovering items in the woods made for a great trip, fishing aside.
Here’s a video recapping the trip, set to the annual theme song selected by one of the other anglers.
