On one of our first days in Pucon, we visited El Cerduo park, a small, private park about forty minutes by car from the house. We had to drive around the base of the Villarrica volcano to reach the park. The park is situated on the northeast side of Volcan Villarrica, the snow capped volcano […]
Exploring our new town of Pucon, Chile
We’ve moved into our new AirBnB in Pucon, Chile, where we’ll be for a couple of weeks. From the house, we have a view of the large Lago Villarrica. Clear water. Mountains along the shores. Sailboats and ski boats moving about. Just behind us, but out of sight due to trees, is the smoldering cone […]
Adventure Haircut
I’ve recounted in a past article that I shave my head before every big adventure. I do it because it’s easier to manage and keep clean when traveling. I decided I needed another trim for the Patagonia roadtrip. This time, like every time, Katie discouraged me from doing it. This time, like every time, I […]
Last Day in Santiago
On Dec. 30, we left Santiago for Pucon, Chile in the Los Lagos region. This is the first leg of a several months road trip through Chile and Argentina. We packed our 4Runner to the gills, filling every nook with an object or luggage. We purged as much as we could, but we still had […]
Education on Board the Ship in Antarctica
While onboard the Magellan Explorer, there were many opportunities to learn from the expedition staff, which included a marine mammal biologist, a geologist, a historian, documentary film makers, and veteran Antarctic guides. The seminars were wide ranging, covering the great explorations of Antarctica, the impact of the Southern Ocean on the global climate, and lessons […]
Humpback Whales at Harry Island, Antarctica
We arrived at Harry Island after lunch on our first full day in Antarctica. Here we had our first excursion off of the boat. We loaded into the zodiacs to explore the bay and watch the many humpback whales that had congregated in the area. We’d see other whales during our Antarctic adventure, but nowhere […]
Crossing the Bransfield Straight to Harry Island, Antarctica
After arriving in Antarctica, we boarded our ship at Frei Station (which is on the west side of the South Shetland Islands at the top of the above map) to sail through the night across the Bransfield Straight. We spotted humpback whales as soon as we left the Frei Station harbor, which excited us for […]
Arrival in Antarctica
A trip to Antartica was a reason for our move to Chile, which provides the proximity, ports, and airports needed for accessing the white continent. We opted for Antarctica21’s fly & sail expedition, opting to fly over the notoriously rough Drake Passage between South America and Antartica and then to board an expedition ship to […]
The Candy Cane Conundrum
The kids had been asking for candy canes since November. It’s such an everywhere thing at Christmas time in the US, they just assumed they would be around here in Chile. I mean, you see Santa, he gives you a candy cane. Your teacher puts on a Christmas movie, she passes out candy canes. Heck, […]
Some things I’ll never understand…
There are some things I’ll never understand about Chile, Santiago, and the rental house we have here. One thing in particular stands out, the handheld plunger….If these are sold in America, they should be an OSHA violation.
