Of course we opted for a Piranha fishing excursion at the Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge on the bank of the Rio Negro. We took a small boat to a treed area of the river. The river height surges in the summer, and so we were fishing in the flooded treetops. We used cane poles with diced red meat for bait. To attract the fish, you slap the surface of the water with the cane pole, leading the fish to believe an animal of some sort had fallen into the water and was flailing. A school of Piranha would swirl, and catching one of the aggressive fish on hooked red meat was not difficult. Even the kids managed to pull a few out.
