Zero Day in Unionville New York – AT Thru-Hike Day 93

Location: Unionville, NY

People visited the small park early this morning so we decided to force ourselves out of bed before making too bad of an impression if we had not already after last night. Many motorcycles roared by the park. The exhausts sounded like automatic weapons being fired in closed space. My head throbbed while we packed our bags and continued until I ate breakfast at a diner across the street. I had a great breakfast, typical though. French toast, eggs, bacon, bagel and orange juice. The women at the diner, Sara’s Soda Shop it was called, were very nice, though they had some difficulty separating our check.

After breakfast we returned to the park. Bonefish and Not Bad intended to wait around until they could call the girl from the bar and buy some pot. I think I am the only hiker that doesn’t do drugs. While they waited, I took my mattress to a shaded corner of the park and crashed for several hours. When I woke up, Bonefish and Not Bad had made no progress on their deal. Still, I wasn’t in a hurry to leave.

We received a visit in the park from a town employee. He said that we were welcome in the park as long as we’d like to stay. Butch, that’s his name, said that the town is trying to have more hikers come to town, that in the past few years the new mayor has been pushing for support from the ATC to endorse the town and asking townspeople to cater to hikers to help improve the local economy, which has been struggling.

We ended up staying the night, making today another unplanned zero for the books. I had dinner at the Back Track Inn and was welcomed, so last night wasn’t too bad maybe. I saw some of the UT-Austin v. Ohio State game, but I went back to the park after the first quarter to catch up on sleep.
