Stratton Motel Zero Day – AT Thru-Hike Day 31

I took a day off at the Stratton Motel. My knee hurts from my fall and may need another day of rest tomorrow. I hope the swelling will go down overnight. I watched the World Cup game with some hikers also taking a break today. One hiker, Southern Comfort, is from Greenville, SC and graduated from Furman University in 2004. He doesn’t know Katharine ‘Kat’ Kelley, but he bets that he would recognize her face if he saw her. He began hiking on April 4th. He only talks about how little fun he’s having. The only reason he moves so quickly is because he’s having a miserable time. I ate so much food today. I ate a pepperoni pizza, can of Pringles, bag of Doritos, bag of Sour Patch Kids, 2 Snickers, 4 Airheads, 2 Apples, 1 box of Lucky Charms with whole milk, 1 quart orange juice, one pint of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, 1 bag of dried fruit, and one bag of beef jerky. Hiking works up my appetite, and when I get to town, I satisfy every hunger desire imaginable. When I looked in the register today, I read that a girl that I had met on the trail, Vitamin, has blown her Achilles tendon and her hike is over. These first few hundred miles are the most difficult to complete physically. I hope that the icy winter, not injury, will be the only reason why I might have to stop short of completing the trail.
