Simple Rivers and Simple Miles – AT Thru-Hike Day 9

Location: Unknown Shelter

I was the first to leave the shelter. I hiked eleven miles. I was well rested. I forded the East Branch of the Pleasant River, and I had very little trouble. The rapids had swelled because of the rain, but I was able to find a calm, waist deep route across the river. Once I crossed, I stopped on the rocks for an hour to dry my boots, eat lunch and wait for the others to arrive. I wanted some entertainment, and I figured watching them fording the river would be an exciting show. They never showed, so I pushed on. I decided to skip one shelter and hike to the next which was two miles farther and 1500ft higher. I was glad I made the climb though because I only have 1200ft to climb to start the day tomorrow, not 2700ft. Joe and Max arrived at the shelter just before dark. They said Eric and Greg had left with them but had fallen behind early. Max thought that they would arrive after ten o’clock but they never came.
