Katie and I opted to book spots in the kayak group on our expedition to Antarctica. In fact, we selected an expedition date based on the availability of two kayaking slots. The program has limited capacity and is in high demand, so we had to be flexible to secure spots.
We each only had the chance to kayak once, as weather and other factors caused kayak expeditions to be cancelled. But the experience was well worth the cost. The opportunity was tremendously rewarding, quietly paddling through icebergs, alongside whales and penguins, and only sea ice. Exploring Antarctic waters under our own power was awesome.
Our guides were also great. They had passion and expertise in paddling in Antarctica, and we enjoyed watching their documentary, ICEolation, in which they paddled a couple of weeks along Antarctica. It was a special thing to be able to see the documentary and then ask questions about their travels.
