After 16 days in Puerto Varas in the Lakes district, we loaded up the 4Runner with all of our gear and luggage and started on the southern journey on Ruta 7, the Carretera Austral. Our first leg of the trip was down to Hornopiren. It took about four hours and included a 30 minute ferry ride.
Hornopiren is a common layover spot for travelers south, as the 4.5 hour ferry from Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzalo departs each morning at 10am.
We arrived in Hornopiren early in the afternoon, and we visited the national park to poke around at the river. We had an easy night at a great cabana in town, and we even managed to find a decent hamburger for dinner.
