A redeeming quality of our modest AirBnB home in Pucon is the private beach access across the street. We spent another beautiful morning on that beach today, arriving on the rocky banks in the cool mountain morning. We hung out in the shade and made our way into the water as the sun climbed higher.
For the first time, we paddled far away enough from the shore for a view of the snow-capped Volcan Villarrica, the most active volcano in Chile. It cone towers at nearly 10,000 ft in elevation behind our home. The crater constantly smokes and occasionally bubbles visible lava and other incendiary material. In recent days, the threat level of the volcano has been increased, and we’ve felt at least one earthquake that experts have tied directly to the magma chamber beneath the mountain.
