Hiking the Slot Canyon at Willis Creek
Jane: Mom, are we going to hike like, every day of this trip?
Me: Well there’s a lot to see and we want to see it. Don’t you like hiking?
Jane: Yea but like, I really like projects.
Me: Projects?
Jane: Yes! You know when I was in school and they used to give me projects to do? I like those!
Me: Ok, I can give you a project. What kind of project do you want to do?
Jane: I don’t know mom? YOU give ME the project! Just not hiking. Hiking isn’t a project.

Hiking hoodoos in Bryce Canyon
She’s shown a bit of resistance to hiking. Particularly when we were in Bryce Canyon and Zion. I’d like to get more upset but she’s 4! She’s hiking over a mile and a half up hill on most days. That’s a lot! Especially when its almost everyday. I’m so proud of her hiking ability but yes darling, I can give you a project. Now let me think about what else we can make with paper bowls and paper plates……

Hiking a sequoia grove in Yosemite.
Love your adventures! You could give her a list of things to find or notice on the hike and photograph them–then she would be doing research for her projects.
Happy trails to you, Lauren
That’s a great idea Lauren! Thanks!
