My dearest crockpot, before we even moved to Santiago, I asked about you in Chilean expat forums. I knew if we were going to be adventuring all day, we’d need to come home to meals warm and ready. You, my friend, were just that. I found you on the blessed Gringos in Chile Whatsapp group. […]
Coyhaique, Capital of Aysen Region in Patagonia
Before our final push to the end of the Carretera Austral, we stopped in Coyhaique, the capital of the Aysen region in Patagonia. We have an AirBnB for about a week, and we’re using our time here to resupply and get ahead in school work before venturing into a more remote region of Patagonia. While […]
The Queulat Camping Quandary
We almost didn’t camp in Parque National Queulat. Mark had a big call for his new job pop up, and we needed to have cell service so that he could take that call. We decided to pull into the closest town to Queulat, which was Puyuhuapi, and see how reception was. I didn’t want to […]
Camping & Hiking in Parque Nacional Queulet
Though we had constant rain, we managed to get a good night sleep at camp and had stunning views of the hanging glacier. The clouds parted long enough for us to get some shots at the mirador.
Visiting Puyuhuapi on Carretera Austral near Queulet
The small town provided a chance for a light resupply and enough cell service to make a couple of calls. It’s a quiet fishing village, and we found excellent seafood dinner at El Muelle, “the dock”.
Last Days in Futaleufu
We grew accustomed to our rustic cabin on the banks of the Futaleufu River. Though we were remote and the cabin lacked some necessities, the green river and dramatic landscape redeemed the other conditions. We made a few visits to the sleepy town, but we found the most enjoyment swimming in the river.
Nights outside Futaleufu
One thing Mark and I were talking about recently is just how loud Chile has been. In Santiago, we had the apartment parties across the street with our favorite penthouse guy that liked to party until 7am on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We had the kid who played soccer at 2am on his porch below us […]
Visit to Palena, Chile
We ventured a bit off the beaten path to Palena, Chile, a sleepy town south of Futaleufu and near the border with Argentina. We drove the fifty KMs to the town for fuel and few grocery items. We were running low, and they have a small COPEC gas station there. Since we’re so remote, it […]
Sendero Ventisquero, near Chaiten, Chile
We drove about an hour from our AirBnB outside of Futaleufu towards Chaiten for a pleasant hike to see a glacier in Corcovado national park.
At Home in Futaleufu
We settled into our AirBnB outside Futaleufu. It’s actually well outside Futaleufu, about 45 kms. It’s remote. The water is pumped from the Futaleufu River, the electricity is strained, and hot water is inconsistent. While the house lacks certain comforts and consistencies, the redeeming quality is its location in the valley and on the river. […]
