Agreed on the Mountain Lions. I’m quite sure I got a glimpse of one in 2006 in New Hampshire.

I know that the Federal official statement does not acknowledge this, but those of us who live in the mountains have seen them close up.

Death Valley is awesome. I went to Death Valley last year. It is fantastic, and super duper hot. If you have kids in tow, check out this itinerary I put together for taking kids to Death Valley.

When are you starting your SOBO thru-hike? I’m planning on June 22, 2016.

Thanks for sharing, Margaret. Sounds like you had some real challenges on the trail. Glad you were able to get help!

I can second the suggestion for Shaw’s. I did the Hundy in ’09 and my hiking partner needed to come out twice-once for a back injury, once for a high fever. Both times, we sent word (*cell phone reception was not good in the area-don’t rely on it!) thru other hikers and drivers on the logging roads. The Shaw’s shuttle was great about picking us up and bringing us to stay in Monson. Their boarding house is incredible! Clean rooms, welcome showers, friendly staff, awesome food (and lots of it!), and even a clothing and gear exchange.

I would recommend Shaw’s Boarding House. They are located in Monson, ME, at the southern end of the 100 mile wilderness. I bet they would pick you up from the airport, provide a place to stay for the night, and then shuttle you to Mt. Katahdin the next day, but you’ll need to call to inquire.

Best of luck on the hike.
